About

From hands-on engineering to national strategy — driven by purpose.

“I look at my children and I know I'm helping shape the future of their learning here in Aotearoa.”

Clayton Hubbard · N4L 10-year anniversary

With over 20 years of experience in IT and telecommunications, I am a technology strategist and solutions specialist with a track record of delivering some of New Zealand's largest and most complex architecture and digital transformation programmes.

Since joining Network for Learning (N4L) at its inception in 2013, I have helped build, secure, and evolve the national platform that connects every state school and kura in Aotearoa to fast, safe, and reliable internet. That journey has taken me from hands-on network engineering through solution architecture, enterprise architecture, and now strategic advisory — always with the same driving purpose: improving outcomes for students and teachers through technology that just works.

I was recognised with the 2020 Reseller News Innovation Award for Entrepreneurship — Technical Excellence for leading the design of 2,450+ individual school wireless networks — one of the largest Wi-Fi deployments of its kind globally.

“I initially started out working in sales, which I loved — but it was such an inspiring shift to move from a business that was focused on profitability to one focused on purpose.”

“One of my proudest moments over the last decade was when we reached our target to connect 500 schools to broadband.”

“There's a difference about delivering social outcomes, keeping kids safe. We work in a very dynamic environment — things are changing, it’s not a boring environment. You are constantly challenged, you constantly have opportunity to make that social impact. I think that has kept me very passionate.”
